Kanchan Chander
Kanchan Chander (b.1957, Delhi) learnt painting and printmaking at various institutions including College of Art in Delhi, Weisensee Kunst Hochschule at Berlin and the Art School at Santiago. Recipient of Lalit Kala Academy and Ministry of Human Resource Development fellowships in India, a French Government scholarship for study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, she taught for two decades at College of Art, Delhi before turning freelance. Shifting her focus from tribal imagery of the Shakti cult, she has worked in collage and brightly painted female torsos. More recently, her work has featured female legends, mainly Frida Kahlo and the stars of Hollywood and Bollywood, while continuing to portray aspects of fertility, the erotic and the sensuousness of female form, bedecked with sequins, silver leaf and beads etc. Her colorful and embellished compositions come in a mix of photographs, prints, and digital work, drawing and painting on canvas, wood and other material. She often appears herself within the frame to enter some of the characters and silhouettes of the idols she evokes. Featured in solo and group shows at Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Nepal. Australia, and Japan, her work was also included in Norwegian International Print show, Triennial India, International Print Biennale at France, Bhopal, Yugoslavia, and the UK. A Founder Member of the Indian Printmakers Guild, she is the recipient of YuvaMahotsava, Sahitya Kala Parishad, AIFACS, and International Print Biennale Bradford awards. Her work is held in the collections at V&A London, Fukuoka Museum Japan, Mumbai Airport and Air India, amongst others. Kanchan lives and works in New Delhi.
