VIREN TANWAR
Viren Tanwar (b.1952, Hissar, Haryana) received his diploma in Painting from Government College of Art, Chandigarh before pursuing his Masters from Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London on a British Council Scholarship. He has taught Art for several years at Government College of Art, Chandigarh and Northern Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT), Mohali and undertaken other assignments and jobs before turning to full time Artist. Viren, who’s life has gone through many swings, reflects these fluidity and ease on his canvases. The harshness and pleasures, complexity and naivety – facets of today’s life make appearance in his imagery in a stylistic rendering that plays with form and color and light and shade, in resonance with Pahari miniatures. There is also a touch of fun and satire in his brightly colored vibrant canvases.
Viren is a Member Advisory Board, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and has been a General Council member of National Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi and Secretary and Vice – Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi, Chandigarh and Secretary Lalit Kala Akademi, Punjab and Associate of the North Zone Cultural Centre.
His work has been exhibited in several shows in various Indian cities, state exhibitions and international expositions in Austria, America, Belgium, China, England, France, Germany, Israel, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, South Africa and Thailand. The awards to his credit include, many International, National and State level. Viren’s works are in the permanent collection of Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, USA. Chester and Davida Herwitz Collection, USA. Albertina Museum, Vienna, Austria. ESSL Museum, Vienna, Austria. MOSA (Museum of Sacred Art), Belgium. National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. National Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. Roerich Museum, Naggar, Himachal Pradesh. The Kerala Museum, Kochi, various other museum’s across India.
His works are in prominent private collections like, Lakshmi Mittal, Ambani’s TATA Sons, Podar’s and many other corporate and private collections across the world. His works have been auctioned in Sotheby’s and Bonhams. The artist lives and works in Greater Noida.
